I often find myself reflecting on my time with horses. Sometimes it’s when I’m overwhelmed with gratitude and my heat swells while I’m out riding my horse in the open grass field, other times it’s to get myself through tough times as life’s demands and financial obligations stack up.

These are just a few of the things I believe I owe to my time with horses and what keeps me believing that it’s all worth it;

A sense of responsibility and accountability: Horses taught me that caring for another being requires unwavering commitment and accountability. They rely on us for their well-being, and that responsibility is a privilege, not a burden.

How to face frustration, fear, and disappointment: Every stumble and setback with horses taught me resilience. I learned to face challenges head-on, to move forward through fear, and to bounce back from disappointment with grace and determination.

Humility and how to check my ego: Horses have a way of humbling us like nothing else. They don’t care about our titles or achievements; they respond to authenticity and respect. I learned to set my ego aside and approach each interaction with humility and openness.

The power of teamwork: Learning to communicate with a 1000 lbs partner who doesn’t speak my language and has a mind of its own has taught me the true meaning of teamwork. Making demands and expecting them to be met unconditionally doesn’t usually work out well – in the saddle and in life.

Gratitude and respect: Horses taught me to take care of my belongings, and be grateful for what I have.

A work ethic like no other: Early mornings and long days at the barn taught me the value of hard work and dedication. I learned that the results I achieve are a direct reflection of the effort I put in—a lesson that extends far beyond the arena walls.

To see success in learning, not just winning: Perhaps the most profound lesson of all, horses taught me that success isn’t just about winning ribbons or accolades. It’s about the journey, the growth, and the lessons learned along the way.
