The discussion to lease or buy is one that will always spark debate. But the truth is, both options have their merits, advantages and drawbacks. Which option is right for you is completely dependent on your goals, budget, and preferences. Not to mention lifestyle, the season of life you are in and how that may change (or not) in the future.
I’d love to give you an answer on which is the ‘better’ option, but ultimately, it’s up to you. Here’s are four reasons someone might see leasing as a good option.
4 Reasons To Lease Vs Buy
Cost-Effective: Leasing allows you to access a high-quality performance horse without the upfront purchase price. This can be especially beneficial if you’re just starting in the competitive world and don’t want to commit to a long-term financial investment. It may also be an interim option while you look for your long term partner.
Flexibility: Leasing offers flexibility in terms of the horse’s commitment period. You can choose short-term leases for specific events or longer-term leases most commonly over the term of one year. This flexibility can adapt to your changing needs and goals. This is particularly a great option for young kids that are still riding ponies but growing quickly and in a years time may outgrow that particular pony.
You can also consider a part-lease or half-lease where there is flexibility on the number of days per week you are riding that particular horse.
Reduced Maintenance Costs: If you are considering a part-lease, you may have the opportunity to share expenses like routine veterinary care, farrier costs, regular maintenance and even emergencies with the owner or the other leaser. This can save you money and alleviate the stress of both the regular costs of care and unexpected bills.
Try Before You Buy: Leasing allows you to evaluate a horse’s suitability for your specific needs before making a long-term commitment. This “trial period” can help you avoid purchasing a horse that isn’t a good fit for your goals.
Hopefully that helps give you some direction on how you might choose the best approach for you.
