The Wellness Trilogy: The Physical, Mental, and Emotional Benefits of Owning Horses

If you’ve spent any time in the barn, or around horses at all, you’ve likely by now learned that horses are a significant financial obligation, and for many, it can be cause for hesitation when exploring the possibility of taking that next step toward horse ownership.

The expense is substantial, the commitment to the lifestyle is significant, so it’s worthy of your full consideration and contemplation.

Imagine asking thousands of horse owners a critical question: “If you knew then [before you bought your first horse], what you know now [the actual financial and lifestyle implications of horse ownership], would you still venture down the road of horse ownership? IE; Is it worth it?”

Well, I did. I polled thousands of horse owners from pleasure to performance horses, rookies and veterans, and while there may have been things they’d do differently (largely due to some lessons learned the hard way), the resounding “yes” from all angles illuminates the conclusion that the benefits of owning these magnificent creatures not only justify the financial expense but, for many, make it an investment that’s truly worthwhile.

For many, owning a horse is not just a hobby; it’s a lifestyle that offers rewards that go far beyond the show ring, or even the barn. The physical, mental, and emotional benefits of caring for and having the privilege of riding horses are abundant. In this blog post, we’ll look at how horses can positively impact your well-being on multiple levels and uncover why so many equestrians believe that the benefits of owning a horse are immeasurable, making every dollar spent a wise choice.

Physical Benefits:

Exercise and Fitness: Contrary to the (un)popular belief that “the rider just sits there” [ugh!] our sport require riders to be in excellent physical shape. The act of riding itself is an effective workout that engages your core muscles, improves balance, and enhances cardiovascular health. Daily stable chores, such as mucking out stalls and grooming, keep owners physically active, fostering a healthier lifestyle.

Fresh Air and Connection with Nature: Spending time at the barn means you’re in close proximity to nature. The smell of hay, the feel of the sun on your skin, and the calming presence of horses can reduce stress and improve overall well-being.

Improved Posture and Flexibility: Riding promotes good posture and flexibility as you learn to maintain a strong, aligned position in the saddle. This can have a positive impact on your posture in everyday life.

Mental Benefits:

Stress Reduction: Interacting with horses and engaging in the intricate world of competitive riding can be a therapeutic escape from the demands of daily life. Horses have a calming presence, and the focus required for training and competition can help alleviate stress.

Mental Resilience: Riding requires intense mental focus and discipline. As an owner and rider, you’ll develop mental resilience, patience, and determination, which can extend to other areas of your life.

Goal Setting and Achievement: Competing in any sport involves setting and achieving goals, whether it’s mastering a specific riding skill or a desired outcome in competition. This process fosters a sense of accomplishment and motivation that can spill over into your personal and professional life.

Emotional Benefits:

Companionship: The bond between a horse and its owner is unlike any other. The emotional connection formed with your equine partner can provide a deep sense of companionship, reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Boost in Confidence: Overcoming the many challenges in the world of horses can significantly boost your self-esteem and confidence. As you and your horse achieve milestones and successes, you’ll feel a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Stress Relief: The simple act of being around horses can have a calming effect on the human psyche. The rhythmic motion of riding and the trust built between horse and rider create a unique emotional bond that brings peace and contentment.

Owning horses is more than a pastime; it’s a transformative expereince that offers a holistic approach to well-being. From the physical benefits of exercise and fresh air to the mental advantages of increased resilience and goal achievement, and the emotional rewards of companionship and stress relief, the world equestrian sports has much to offer those who embrace it.

So, if you ask me “is it worth it?” my answer without doubt would be yes. Every [pinched] penny of it.
