So you’re off to the tack store to pick up your grooming essentials.?
Having the right grooming tools is a must when taking care of horses. It’s actually pretty exciting when you’re getting your first set of brushes. It’s like a rite of passage, your very first grooming kit! Feels like the start of something exciting, you know? Whether you’re taking care of that very special school horse you ride every week or you’ve just found your very own lease horse, these brushes will be your part of every trip to the barn. And hey, if you’ve just bought your own horse, these tools will be with you for a long time and an important part of daily care for your new best friend.
Grooming tools also make great gifts for any horse person. They’re not expensive and you can really never have enough.
Horse people are obsessed with their horses, and for that reason, the options for grooming tools are endless. Here are the five grooming essentials you’ll put in your grooming box to get started.
Grooming Glove: This is top of the list because it’s my all-time favourite grooming item. This rubber mitt gets all the hardened dirt off, scrubs away dried sweat and gets under the hair. It’s also soft enough for horses sensitive skin and unlike the harder curry comb options, this can be used on their faces, behind their ears and on their legs. My horses LOVE this option and relax into their grooming routine.

Large Hard Brush: A good hard brush flicks off all that dirt your grooming glove loosened. I like an extra large hard brush simply for the surface it covers. If your hands are smaller (or you’re buying brushes for those with smaller hands) a standard or small hard brush does the same thing.

Super Soft Body Brush: These can feel luxurious and I know my horses love having their face brushed with an ultasoft body brush. The softer the brush, the more luminous it leave the coat. I think the horses love this final step as it would just feel so good all over their bodies!

Hoof picks: An important item that for some reason will always go missing. Best to have a back up as well.

Bonus: Towels! Everyone has towels at home that were once fluffy new shower towels and are now sitting at the back of the linen closet only to be used when the laundry has piled up and there are no other options. Give those towels a new home and new purpose at the barn. Whether you’re drying off legs after a bath, or rubbing out sweat stains in the winter, having a few towels around will always come in handy at the barn.
Once you’ve picked out your new brushes you’ll need something to put them in. Lots of grooming kits are large and bulky, but you really just need a small grooming bag.
You’re all set! You’ve got everything you need to start taking good care of your horse daily. Now off you go to the barn!
